The first step in any research process for a new or existing marketing campaign is to understand that it doesn't matter how many keywords you're using.
 
In fact, your job really isn't to focus solely on the key words themselves as odd as that may seem.
 
What I mean by this is that you should look at your market and analyze the niche itself.  From there it's a lot easier to expand outwardly and dig down deep to get the best possible keywords for your promotion.
 
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is that they decide to start by promoting ONE product and then go searching for keywords to use in their content.
 
The keywords of course are to get the search engine's attention, but they've skipped an important step.
 
TAKE THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW YOUR MARKET
 
If you're an avid golfer or if you feel that you know enough about the sport that you could do really well, then by all means there's no harm in promoting.
 
However, if you're going to do this why not start off on the right foot?  Join a few gold forums. Find out what other people are talking about. Participate with other members in open discussions and take time to get to know what it is that people really want.
 
Learn what it is that people are passionate about and listen to them talk about products and services they may already be using. These may be good things to put on your own list for future affiliate promotion or they may give you in-site to a competitor.
 
IMPORTANT - Notice that at no point did I say to go join a forum and search for the keyword "golf swing" to see what other members have posted about this.
 
At some point later on you may decide to do this, but only if you are 100% certain that THIS is what people are really interested in learning more about.
 
Until then, your job is to read what others say, take in what they're talking about and interact as you get to know more about your target market.
 
If you do this they will tell you exactly what they want more information about and in the end you'll be able to come up with many ideas instead of focusing on just the one concept you started with.
